How To Care For Your Breasts During Pregnancy

The body is ever-changing throughout pregnancy, but few areas go throughout more of a transformation than the breasts. Cracking, soreness and even pus are all completely normal, noticeable symptoms in the breasts and nipples. To help you through this process, we’ve compiled 5 of our best tips for you to help you care for your breasts during pregnancy.


1. Wash Your Nipples Regularly

Starting in around the fifth month, your nipples will start to release viscous fluid. This will appear in a crust-like form, probably overnight, and might cause the surrounding area to ache and become red. Don’t pick at it! Peeling will only irritate the skin further. Instead, use a warm, damp cloth to softly cleanse the area.

2. Pick The Right Bra

Wearing the right bra will do wonders for your comfort and support levels during pregnancy. Avoid underwire as much as possible, as the  rigidness can aggravate sensitive skin and impact milk production later during breastfeeding. Make sure the cups have enough area for growth, and aren’t in danger of constricting or inflaming the nipples.

3. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

You should be massaging your breasts daily with oil (we like sesame!), running your hands in circles around the areola area. Not only will this stimulate circulation, but it will also aid in avoiding the cracking and dryness that often comes hand-in-hand with the developing body.

4. Eat A Healthy Diet

Diet is ever-important during pregnancy, but especially in regard to healthy milk production. Focus on a diet rich in daily vitamins, incorporate lots of fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water to ensure your body is in proper shape for delivery.

5. Spend Time On Yourself

As your body changes and hormone levels fluctuate, it is more important than ever to spend time invested in self-care. A daily breast routine will both help to combat those uncomfortable symptoms associated with pregnancy and will allow you a devoted moment of peace and quiet to focus on your changing body.


As always, with any new product, make sure to consult with your doctor. One of the most important things to keep in mind during this journey is there are so many unknowns, so what worked for your skin before may not work for you now. Even if you don’t physically see or feel change, your skin will fluctuate constantly during pregnancy. Err on the side of caution — this isn’t a time to be experimenting with new products. Keep up with a routine. Less is best, from ingredients to steps. Focus on hydration (including serums!) and tons of SPF. You’ve got a lot to look forward to.
